| GREENWOOD MS Interviews and photographs by Amy Evans. This project funded in part by a grant from Viking Range Corporation. |
Once a bustling Delta town known as the “Cotton Capital of the World,” Greenwood, Mississippi, has been reinventing itself since the days when cotton was king. While there is still a cotton market here, today Greenwood is better known as the home of Viking Range Corporation and serves as an example of what the future holds for this part of the Mississippi Delta. And with a new boutique hotel, the Alluvian, Greenwood is greeting the future with open arms, while still holding on to parts of its history. One particularly unique element of Greenwood’s history is the tradition of family-owned restaurants, opened by immigrants generations ago and still feeding hungry Mississippians. And there are countless other culinary offerings to be found in this small town, further highlighting this place as an anomaly of sorts--a place that people have left but where they still come to eat. And where they will keep coming to experience this jewel of a Delta town.
