Welcome to the Southern Foodways Alliance -- an institute
of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture with headquarters at the
University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi.
The Southern Foodways Alliance documents and celebrates
the diverse food cultures of the American South. We set a common table
where black and white, rich and poor -- all who gather-- may consider
our history and our future in a spirit of reconciliation.
Help the SFA build a solid financial foundation for its
ongoing projects and annual events.

Oral History Initiative - Welcome!
Gathering the Stories Behind the Food
| Integral to an appreciation
and understanding of the diverse food cultures of the American So
uth is the collection and preservation of the stories behind
the food. Our Oral History Initiative seeks to capture
stories of Southerners who grow, create, serve, and consume food
and drink.
Stories are all around us; it’s just a matter of getting people
to share them. If you don’t already have a subject in mind,
start asking around. Digging in your own back yard is a great way
to find interesting tales: the secret to your grandmother’s
fluffy biscuits, the spice that gave you neighbor’s tamales
their kick, or the story of how the old man down the road put his
daughters through college while running a weekend hot dog stand.
No subject is too small. No subject is too big.
We invite you to participate
in this Oral History Initiative. You can get involved by conducting
your own interview, using the tools available on this site, or by
volunteering your labor or resources. But first, take a look at
some of the stories we have collected—the stories behind the
food. Links to the projects are listed in the index, to the right.
