Welcome to the Southern Foodways Alliance -- an institute of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture with headquarters at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi.

The Southern Foodways Alliance documents and celebrates the diverse food cultures of the American South. We set a common table where black and white, rich and poor -- all who gather-- may consider our history and our future in a spirit of reconciliation.

Ongoing Projects

Tennessee Barbecue There’s no straight answer to explain how hot tamales made it to the Mississippi Delta, but as soon as they got there, they stayed.

Amy Evans is mapping a Mississippi Delta Hot Tamale Trail, piecing together stories and recipes from the folks who are the keepers of the Delta tamale tradition. Later, the project will be expanded to include tamale makers and vendors throughout the South.

Check back to explore the project online, coming Fall 2005.

Through generous support from Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q in Birmingham, Alabama, the SFA launched its Founders Oral History Project last fall. This important undertaking will forever preserve the history of the SFA through interviews with the organization's fifty founding members. By recruiting active members in locations across the country to conduct the interviews, SFA supporters have the opportunity to be more actively involved in the SFA's mission--and its history. To date, more than forty interviews have been collected, and we are now in the process of archiving the work for presentation on the web. Check back for portions of the project to appear as they are completed.
